Autumn Term 2008 - November Newsletter

Dear All,

Welcome back after an extended half term - the children definitely seem to have benefited from the rest.

As I write preparations for Bonfire Night are going ahead, hopefully the cake sale and sale of Farnham Firework tickets will go well and make much needed funds for the school.

Auction Night is on 14th November. It should be a good evening so please come, maybe bid for an item and hopefully have a few laughs. If you could offer items or services to bid for they would be very much appreciated. Please return your slip as soon as possible.

The Friends are also busily organising the Christmas Fair, - you should receive a letter detailing events next week. Please fill in your reply slip and return via your child’s book bag. Thank you so so much to the Friends for their magnificent support of the school; I really don’t know what we would do without you.

Nativity

This year we are performing “Hosanna Rock” by Sheila Wilson.

Younger siblings of Rainbow Class are invited to attend the Rainbow performance on Thursday 4th December at 2.00pm with a parent/carer. The Rainbow performance for adults only will be on Friday 5th December at 9.30pm. Of course unaccompanied adults are also welcome at the 4th December performance!

Autumn half-term INSET days

The staff attended a Confederation Inset Day on “Guided Writing”. The day was led by one of our Literacy consultants, Jonathan Roddick. He gave us much food for thought as to how to further develop writing at our school.

We also had an Inset on Artsmark run by art consultant Ged Gast. We were joined by members of staff from Confederation schools. This was a highly useful Inset with pointers to how we can assess children’s art. We had to assess each others as part of the Inset Day!!!!!!!!!

Vouchers and Tokens

Sainsbury vouchers
Each classroom has had lots of new equipment to use in their outside areas including a bowling alley! Thank you for all the vouchers you collected.

Flora Tokens
Mrs Helliwell is collecting tokens from Flora lids for cookery items.

Breakfast Club Under Threat

This is such a delightful addition to our provision at Folly Hill; however, as things are at this time Breakfast Club is not sustainable. We will soon be sending an audit sheet to families to ascertain level of use Breakfast Club is likely to have in the future and if people who use the club would be willing to pay any more for such good quality child care. If you find Breakfast Club helpful please use it or we will lose it.

School Closures

Please note that emergency school closures will no longer be posted on the Surrey Alert site but can now be found on the County Council website. A permanent link to this page may be found under the Parents section above or, temporarily »here«.

Swimming

Swimming lessons for Year 1 children continue from Thursday 6th November, when contributions towards the cost for the second half of the term (£30-00) will be due if you have not already paid for the whole term. Cheques payable to Folly Hill Infants School Swimming Account please.

Autumn Term Dinner Money

Dinner money for the second half of the Autumn term will be £61-20 for Rainbow/Sunshine classes and £59-40 for Moonbeam or £9-00 per week (£7-20 for the first week only).  Cheques should be made payable to Surrey County Council and all money, in a named envelope, given to the class teacher at registration at the beginning of the week.  Payment can also be made »on-line«.  You will be advised separately if you have any money in hand from this half-term.

Conference in Sweden

I am delighted to inform you that I have received funding from the British Council to attend an international conference and shadowing opportunity at the end of November.  I will be working in Ekilstuna in Sweden along with June Trantom, head of Hale.

Romania

Thank you so much for all the items you brought to school for the Roma children in Brasov and for Brasov children’s hospital.  Angus showed the children some photos of the places and children in Brasov and I definitely think the children realised how lucky they are to have warm homes, clothes and adequate food.  Angus would like to say thank you to parents personally so he will be delivering a brief introduction to our Nativity performance on December 11th.  Our collection at the performances will be for the children in Brasov.
